Gutenberg used RJ text, but from what I can see in on-line pictures of
his books, he hyphenated with abandon. Also, he put punctuation that
fell at line's end (including hyphens) to the right of the column edge.

So RR is battling against an ancient tradition, probably derived from
styles established by scribes.

About 50 years ago my father's
newspaper used the Varityper A20,
and all the text was justified by
stretching on the right, not quite
like I've done here (using more
spacing between words) but instead
more space between letters. Thus
everything was denser to the left
and airier to the right. Dad could
have saved effort by setting in
ragged right, but that's not usual
newspaper style. 50 or 500 years
back, right-justification was the
rule.
