I think it depends on the subject matter. Software you can probably
learn while you skate by on your puckish charm and good looks.
Documenting safety protocols for the Large Hadron Collider? Not so much.

Sorry..don't buy it. It may not be enough to know network protocols,
but if I'm bringing in a writer to write about protocols, they need
more that enthusiasm and a knowledge of grammar.

I still stick by statement that you should know something about the
environment in some way, shape, or form
