Finding an appropriate font for print and on-screen output that is
unambigious is not easy. At one time we were printing docs on a
daisy-wheel machine in Courier. We used Courier because that was what we
used. Lower-case ELL and numeral ONE were identical. Crucial
distinctions were difficult to manage.
With my trusty Swiss Army Implement I manufactured some specially carved
wheels on which the two characters were different.
Now in the modern on-screen age the problems are similar, but reliable
hand-carving of fonts is a bit more difficult. Gutenberg and his fellow
typographers had it easier.
