Ok, everyone, don't panic, I get it! I won't go near the registry :-)
Nor will I worry about the Event Log files.

I'll try to uninstall/reinstall Flash and walk through the Adobe
troubleshooting steps.

I will look for more RAM to install and do that (original question
many hours ago). Honest, Dad.

I didn't set up Aero, it was the default.

The computer is/was set to do  automatic updates. I don't like to do
that, but as everyone is pointing out so feverishly, unless you know
what you're doing, it's pretty useless to try to monitor (I didn't
update a few non-Windows items  because I didn't know what programs
they were or figure I'd use them. Honestly, this computer came with so
much junk loaded on it, and ads). Ah well..
