Tell him "he rolled a 1 on his saving throw" when you tell him "no". He
should understand that.

(Translation for non-geek non-roleplaying-gamers: A 20-sided die is thrown
to see if an action is successful or not. 20 being the highest possible
number, which corresponds to "successful" and 1 being the lowest)

Some gamers do get evangelical about their games, and I feel for you that
you've found one of those. Good luck with this situation.
