Partner" sounds like "same-sex partner," to me.

Hi Lauren,

It's interesting how once you get away from the standard "husband and wife,"
it's difficult to describe couples. My wife and I described ourselves as
partners before we got the piece of paper and now we are husband and wife.
We have some non-married heterosexual friends who have been together for
longer than we've been married who describe their other half as "their
partner" or "my better half." We also have an older married couple who
describe their other half as "him" and her." You probably don't want to use
"and Fred (or Fran) and her though."
