One thing that made the transition *much* easier between 2K and XP was
that the guts of the OS's were still very similar, and you could expect
drives and programs to run similarly on both systems.

Vista was designed as a different animal, down to the core. While you
could have a single set of drivers or a program that would work on XP
and 2K, you need new files for Vista. And there was not a whole lot of
development time between the final Vista release candidate and the
demand for drivers and programs that would run on Vista (hence programs
and devices that will "install" but still run pretty funky). A
ground-up redesign can be done with minimal pain - Vista was not. I
call that poor planning on Microsoft's part.
