Paul:
I wanted to mention a situation in which changing the part number for
each revision is not a good idea. In our industry, external agencies
mandate reference to documentation by part number, so a revision that
changed a part number would cause an undesirable ripple effect as we'd
also have to update all those cross-references.
When agency requires us to use a part number *and* a revision number,
we're logically no better off than if we used a new part number for each
revision, but it's still so deeply engrained in our systems and culture
that an information product has one part number for life that we'd have
difficulty with your approach.
In fact, we've absorbed some companies that did use a different part
number for each revision, and it's caused us no end of grief.
