TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Even during the height of the boom the most interest I ever
had in STC (other than the job listings) was my local chapter
meetings and the informal happy hour "schmoozes" the local
chapter put on. So I would say that in my case, the emphasis
on online material and SIGs has definitely reduced STCs
usefulness to me. As Bill said, you can find most of the
online material yourself; getting out of your company's
writing silo and hooking up with other real, live writers and
managers is priceless
