TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
My experience as a hiring manager has been that the old
STC salary survey was useful ammo in the fight for higher
tech writer salaries because most HR drones and corporate
upper management bean-counters have never even heard of
STC, much less known enough about the sources of the
survey data to believe that members inflated the figures
they provided. I wonder who STC talked about to gauge
the credibility of the survey. I just checked with a couple
of other pubs managers I know, and nobody asked them
either.
