Ron Hearn asked, "So where does that leave me as a Documentation
Specialist?"
I'm not sure, but wherever it is, I'm there with you. In my case,
"documentation specialist" means the person who writes user manuals,
copyedits a variety of documents (everything from design documents to
proposals to, occasionally, the company newsletter), performs peer reviews
and QA for distance learning courseware, and, in a pinch, helps out with
software testing. I'm also one of the two resident grammar gurus and the
person who can generally beat Microsoft Word into submission. But, then,
one of the neat things about working for a small company (and sometimes one
of the frustrating things) is that you end up wearing a lot of different
hats.
Personally, I think the title "documentation specialist" exists because it
sounds impressive without really meaning anything. When I tell other people
what I do, I usually refer to myself as a technical writer or a technical
writer/copyeditor.
