Robert,

Are you suggesting that we defer to O'Reilly's Style Guide for the rule? Or that we should look how O'Reilly presents information so that we can derive the rule? Personally, when it comes to grammar usage rules, I prefer to refer to a style guide rather than to try to derive rules from how content is presented. Chicago is very widely used, O'Reilly's has its own in-house a guide, but I don't know if it is published. O'Reilly does publish Sun's guide, "Read Me First!," although I haven't looked at it lately and I don't what rules it recommends for indefinite articles.
