I am always amazed at how often this thread pops up and how long each
thread runs. If you search the interTubes for "punctuation rule full
stop space after" you will find countless sources that support or
counter your position. Best rule is the rule that makes the best
amount of sense.
Honestly, it doesn't matter. The two-spaces-after rule is said to be
"purist" by enough interTube references to stick. If you like two
spaces, you're a purist. Bask in your punctuation purity while you sip
conac in a high-back leacher chair. The one-space-after rule is said
to be modern. If you like one space, you're a modernist. Enjoy your
pinot noir while you shop online at Ikea.com.
What matters most is that you pick a style and stick with it. If
you're having trouble doing so because you're going head to head with
another writer you work with, I ask you both to stop for a moment and
truly ponder the importance of the issue. If it's of dire importance,
perhaps someone can pass on the issue and the other person can pass on
a different style difference.
This debate is ongoing and will likely not end. Embrace the beauty of
compromise.
