In the days of typewriters it was common to use two spaces. Also, the emacs
editor (now more often used for program editing than for text editing)
contains algorithms for recognizing "end of sentence" at ". " although
I find myself not using that convention anymore.

In typesetting and in modern computerised word processing, a single space
is most common. I would recommend that you use the single space, but also
not have battles over the issue. Time might be better spent on arguing
whether to use direct (and thus possibly insulting) language, or indirect
(and thus possibly misleading) language. Americans tend to take the former
approach, much of the rest of the world the latter.
