My current client has its home-office in Germany, while their U.S. office is here in metro Atlanta, Georgia USA. I was brought in to at least complete documentation for a major project; after that, I may still be needed or not.

Currently, I "stuck" with using Word to generate my stuff. But the other day, I overheard a conversation where it was pointed out that the home office uses FrameMaker. I jumped in with my comments and even gave them a short demo on my trusty laptop. My hope is that they'll keep me around AND bring in Frame as well.

That being said, they also said that the home office in Germany is thinking about bringing in something called "TIM-RS" to handle the documentation needs there and standardize (there's that word again) things, and possibly here. I Googled TIM-RS and found that it's difficult to learn if it's an authoring tool like FrameMaker and Word, or if it's a documentation management and distribution tool, or both. I've also found that the company that makes TIM-RS is based in Germany, it employs around 30 persons, and the installations are practically all in Europe; I could locate no U.S. installs or U.S.-based product sales or support locations. And most of what online stuff there is about TIM-RS is in -- guess what -- German!

Quite honestly, I'd rather stick with FrameMaker, but I do need to intelligently explain what TIM-RS really is if asked. The web site for its manufacturer, Fischer Computertechnik, is great at "techno-babble". (wasn't that an Alan Parsons Project song some time ago?) See what you think . . .
