don't forget --- if you use letters for the months -- you willnever get it
to sort correctly

best way is yyyy/mm/dd that is << 20070806 >> -- always 8-digits, can
never get out of sync and always sorts in ascending order.

We spent a considerable amount of time on this.

In reviewing configuratin management look for Bersoff's book. It was
written in the late 70's early 80's.

He started the company known as BTG in the Washington DC area. Still going
strong the las I heard (2004).

You should always look at the possibility the 'change is inevitable'. Plan
to be agile enough to respond as needed to make the changes.

I worked on a parts numbering scheme that had to take a small company's
entire drafting department from hand-managed record keeping to a database. This
was because of a corporate buying the company I was with and then telling
them they had to change to the corporate structure.

15000 parts, drawings, assemblies, etc.

Learned a lot.
