Maybe "asking questions" isn't as important a skill/characteristic as "insatiable curiosity". Before I worked in dry food packaging, I just assumed like most other people that the flavored modified petroleum byproduct I sprinkle into my morning coffee would look, taste, and act the same as the stuff that came out of a similar bottle the day before. It turns out that actually making that happen is an intensely complicated and fascinating process, and so are many other things in daily life -- and sometimes I'm getting paid to hunker down and figure out how that gets done! What a hoot!

I'm also a huge fan of jigsaw and crossword puzzles. Maybe those should be on that "might make a good tech writer" checksheet, too.
