Dori:

Granted, some mgnt just will not tolerate writers (or developers for that matter) who think without their hands on the keyboard. But many will. To sell the idea to those who will, I demonstrate my zeal for asking alot of questions (proper analysis requires alot of questions) and my skill at functional modeling. Actually, the second will often be optional. If one can demonstrate a zeal for asking alot of questions and a willingness to learn a formal modeling technique he/she will often be given the green light to go for it. I have spent the majority of the seven months in my current TWing assignments creating and verifying data flow diagrams - I have yet to write a paragraph.

If the job requires alot of analysis, it is important to postpone documentation until the approprate time. Postponing the hands-on-the-keyboard stuff is a key principle behind formal analysis techniques such as structured systems analysis and even the UML techniques.

And for his next magic act, Richard will cram this message down the throats and directly into the hearts of my management. Gods and goddesses know I've been trying to get it across to them for lo these many moons.

Pretty please?!
