I work a max of 40 hours a week. Of that, only about 20% of my time is productive. However, I am new with the organization and my management has told me more than once that I am more productive than others that have been with the company for many years. And they are telling the truth. The sad fact is that when you cut away the non-essential, 20% productive time is often truly exceptional.
So what's the point of 50-60 hour weeks? Life is for the living and working dysfunctionally for that many hours is dying.

Engineers at the semiconductor company that I used to work for did
anywhere from 50-65-70 hour weeks. 50 was considered a barely tolerable
minimum. Meetings are regularly scheduled at 5 PM, people work from home
after hours and get calls in the middle of the night, forcing them to
log on then. Not surprisingly, this company is facing huge problems.
