I happen not to be a manager right now, but the same is true of me. I
start/keep working when I'm not in the office. Right now, my employer
appreciates that fact. However, in the past I have worked for employers
where some managers pull out "I don't just work while I'm in the office"
and all good employees think "Why do you think that makes you special?"
and update their resumes.
When I was desperate for work, I even worked for one employer who
utterly refused to believe a non-manager who made that claim, but
automatically supported the manager who was saying the job doesn't stop
at 5 or begin at 9.
I agree that managers should lead by example. I don't give a hoot when
Anon's manager arrives or leaves (unless the manager's work is not
getting done because of it) until it affects when others may leave. I
only wish I had some advice for Anon on how to handle the situation.
