DOH! Some DOS/Windows env variables (PATH, e.g.) don't need it, but the
SET command seems to be needed for creating directory variables in
DOS/Windows.

Apologies to anyone who has built worlds around my earlier post. Here's
an authoritative resource showing bash and Windows syntax (but not korn
shell).
