TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I've gotten a lot of inquiries about technical writer jobs in California in
the last three months or so, and I am in Florida! One recruiter I spoke to
said that they were having trouble finding qualified candidates. If that is
true, you might interview, and if they make an offer, propose a
telecommuting plan after a certain settling-in phase where you worked in the
office for a while. Could you handle three days a week for a couple of
months a their office?
It's worth a try. I've gotten jobs and telecommuted after I was hired,
because I let them know that (1) I am an experienced telecommuter with a
completely equipped home office and (2) I was willing to come in when
needed. I also provide evidence of my productivity on a daily basis.
Out of the last 10 years, I have been a full-time telecommuter for 5 years,
and part time another 3. Now, it's only on an as-needed basis.
Good luck!
