Sandy:

The author is Edward Tufte. At least two of his books include this
illustration, though he's not the creator. His newest title is
"Beautiful Evidence," but I think I've also seen it in his
"Envisioning Information," one of his earlier works.

All of his books are worth reading, or viewing; they're about
communicating information graphically, so they're not strictly about
writing.

I don't recall the author or exact title, but there's a book on graphical
representations of data that's an absolute classic, in the required
reading list.

One illustration shows Napolean's march on Moscow, and retreat
afterwards, with the line changing width as the army is whittled
down, or changing dramatically where they got chopped to pieces
by the Russian.
