RE: Deciding on a Dictionary of Modern English Usage

I like the one that I got in college way back in the late 80's or early
90's.  It was a $5 paperback, Riverside Webster II Dictionary.  It started
falling apart, so I finally put in a plastic bag and stored it somewhere.  I
bought a replacement for $8 and it is mangled and sitting on my sofa with
me.  I have several other dictionaries, an Oxford something or other, an
American Heritage dictionary, law dictionaries, an unabridged huge thing
somewhere, little pocket dictionaries that I have collected since I was 7,
dictionaries from the 1800's, a dictionary of word histories, my online
"friend," www.m-w.com, and I probably have many others, but I always go back
to the Riverside II for common language and usage.  

Sometimes, words have specialized meanings in certain contexts so I try to
find a lexicon that applies to the context.  For example, I don't know of a
printed dictionary for technology terms but my guess is that it would be
obsolete before the ink was dry.  In those cases, I look for online
resources.
