David Neeley offered a correct to my statement that Dell (and others)
might purchase LCD panels from the manufacturer and assemble them:
<<although one buried within them perhaps I can correct?>>

By the evidence, there's no "perhaps" about it. <g>

<<if I understand you correctly you think that Dell assembles the
displays from screens and other components manufactured by others?
That, too, is untrue. They buy them for resale already manufactured
in their entirety and even boxed in Dell boxes per their
specifications. That way, it remains a "pick a box off the shelf and
send it.">>

Quite likely... I definitely overspoke or mispoke. The broader point
is still correct: many (most?) computer companies don't manufacture
their own components anymore, and instead buy them from other
manufacturers. The specific point (that Dell assembles its own LCDs
from component parts) is probably not correct. Different branded
companies (e.g., Dell) do differing amounts of product assembly
themselves; for example, David is probably correct that Dell buys the
monitors pre-assembled, but I'd bet that Dell does do some limited
assembly (or subcontracts it) for their built-to-order PCs, for which
you get to spec the hard drive, video card, etc.
