We never *owned* a lot of books, but there were almost always
three or four library books somewhere in the house. Even today
I don't tend to go to bookstores and buy new books, except for
tech texts. Most of my non-technical, non-periodical reading
today comes from used bookstores, and tends to go back there
eventually after I've finished with them.
