My opinion is that you need to not listen to that recruiter.

With an EE degree and five years of OTJ experience in
documentation I would hardly say that you are "without
experience," though it is true that coming out of a
downturn you may often find yourself up against
candidates with more than five years.

OTOH, the engineering training couldn't hurt.
