Re: Current trends in Authoring Tools?
At the last interview, I saw the guy's eyes glaze over when he heard my answer
to "Do you know Adobe?"
He didn't even know Adobe what. He had no clue. Of course I don't
know "Adobe." How can anyone answer that question?
Like this. You smile and say, "I know Adobe FrameMaker, Adobe
Acrobat, and Adobe Photoshop" (or whatever is true in your case; since
you don't know any Adobe tools, you can say "I know GIMP, which is
functionally similar to Photoshop," etc.)
The clueless gatekeeper then checks off "knows Adobe" and moves on to
the next ill-formed and poorly phrased question ("Do you know
Microsoft, too?") and hopefully you pass on to the next level of
interview, in which you meet someone technically literate.
Gatekeepers are a fact of life in job-searching, unless you're dealing
directly with a technically sharp hiring manager, which for an
entry-level job, you likely won't be.
Help them help you get what you want, and don't give them a reason to
downcheck you.
