This is probably an untenable argument. The most commonly used
forms for contract labor usually specify that approval of the
contractor invoice for payment constitutes acceptance of the work
being invoiced. The reason for this is to ensure that full ownership
of work produced under "work for hire" contracts belongs to the client
company as soon as possible after it is produced. Unless the contract
involved some performance guarantee, such as the documents passing
a particular regulatory submission, if you or whoever managed this
contract in your absence signed off on the final invoice, that was your
company's assertion that all terms of the contract were deemed
acceptably satisfied by the company (and likewise, the contractor's
acceptance of final payment its assertion that all monies owed had
been properly paid). Of course, you should not take this as gospel
and should see how your contracts are actually worded.

If compliance with the style guide was specified (and a copy was furnished),
they have not finished their job.
