Maggie:

Does your resume list each of your contract jobs as a separate entry in
your work history? If so, it might help to rewrite it so that, instead
of showing many jobs that each lasted only a few months, it shows just
one job -- "Freelance Technical Writer" -- which you've been steadily
performing for many years.

The individual contracts would, of course, be listed in the description
of your accomplishments at that job.
