Is it really worth paying someone else to digitize one tape, and then
another, and...?

Last year I bought a DVD player/recorder for about $100, and I'm very
happy with the VHS tapes that it converted to DVD.

I should also mention that I first bought -- and then returned -- a much
more expensive device that connects a VCR to a PC's DVD-burner.
Regardless of the settings, it never produced nearly as good results as
the cheap DVD player/recorder.
