The simple answer to that question is the same as the answer to
my age-old question to the universe (Why, oh why, was "Laverne
and Shirley" a hit TV series?): because people continue to buy
it.

Dan has already posted the solution to your graphics issue. The
only place I ever let Word float any graphic is on some of my cover pages.
