I can actually say I've had the same trouble as Bill. Many employers
look askance at the fact that I spent many years doing tech writing
"on the side" while I was a Web developer and programmer, via doing
help stuff for the sites I created. Some don't see that as "official"
tech writing experience, for reasons that mystify me.

I guess if your job title doesn't actually say "Tech writer," some
folks get confuzzled.

I had a hard time when I was younger. I came up to speed rather
quickly and had quite a bit of technology exposure, experience, and
expertise under my belt at a very early age. I looked good on paper,
and was called in for interviews multiple times. When I went in for an
interview at several places, I could tell immediately that they were
standoffish... and would ask questions such as "You've developed over
40 HTML Help files for various clients over the past two and a half
years?" with a hesitant tone and curious eye. This was in 1998-9, and
I was 24-25 years old. I can only guess as to why I didn't get the
jobs in question, but it sure felt like they were uneasy/skeptical
about my experience given my age...
