RE: Hiring Discrimination

A few years back, I worked for a privately-owned company of about 50
employees, the owner of which told me not to hire anyone over 40,
because they "raise the health insurance rates with all of their
claims."  I pointed out three things:  that HE was over 40 and had no
health insurance claims; that I was over 40 and had no health insurance
claims; and that it is ILLEGAL to discriminate against people because of
their age so I would not put the company at risk for a EEO investigation
by doing anything that might even hint of discrimination.  Further, I
told him that it served the company better to get the right person in
terms of skills, work ethic, and personality than to include or exclude
someone because of age or any other non-employment-related trait.

I can't say that the owner had a complete change of attitude, but he
understood my points and didn't fire me for my adamancy.    And, I hired
a 53-year-old bookkeeper who was a gem.
