Notice how the abbreviations appear to be backwards:
12 M for Noon
12 N for Midnight

According to my grandmother, that is the correct
usage--M is for meridies and N for noctis. Genitive
of time, if I remember sort of correctly. She studied
Latin around 1890, before it had been declared dead.

Those who are non-Latinate have a choice:
12 M for Moon
12 N for Nidnight

or the opposite,

12 M for Midnight
12 N for Noon

For this reason I never abbreviate noon or midnight.

In some legal documents the starting of a day is
listed as "12:01 A.M. on the 24nd of July" to avoid
the question of whether midnight belongs to the 24th
or to the 23rd.
