While not necessarily technical, Editing By Design by Jan White has a
lot of good information on using graphics effectively with both good
and bad examples. I found that the information carries over into my
technical work just fine.

I would also recommend the Non-Designer's Design Book by Robin
Williams. She has some good information on the subject, though not as
comprehensive as White.
