Hi David:

I have a book by Microsoft about GUI design standards that I bought from
Microsoft Press:

Microsoft Windows User Experience: Official Guidelines for User
Interface Developers and Designers. MS Press.

Microsoft(r) Windows(r) User Experience
... official guidelines for creating well-designed, visually and
functionally consistent user interfaces for applications that run on the
Microsoft(r) Windows ... MICROSOFT(r) WINDOWS(r) USER EXPERIENCE is ...

www.microsoft.com/mspress/southpacific/books/book11588.htm

It's certainly not the only book out there on this, but it is very easy
to use and has everything I ever needed as a GUI designer. Why not take
advantage of all those research $$ that Microsoft spent to develop this?

I found it very valuable, although it's not free :-)
