Select Tools --> Options to open the Options window. Click the General
tab, then look down at the bottom for the Measurement Units drop down.
Choose Inches and click OK.

All done. :-)

Subject: Word 2003 rulers display in pts not inches

Hello,
All of a sudden, Word 2003 is displaying the ruler in pts instead of
inches. This carries over to the page setup which has the paper
dimensions in pts, as well as header and footer, left and right margins.
I can't find where this "view" is designated. Has anyone experienced
this before and do you know how to switch it back to inches?

Thanks,
