For several years I worked as a trainer in an office where the director,
a cheerful French woman, didn't use deodorant. Everyone was
complaining. I solved the problem by initiating a conversation with her
about the trainees....it went something like:
Me: "Mme, we have a problem with one of the trainees....."
Director: "Yes, please tell me."
Me: "You see, he has terrible body odor and everyone is complaining.
Can you imagine - he's probably not using deodorant!"
Director: "What do you suggest?"
Me: "Perhaps I should include "use deodorant regularly" when I discuss
appropriate appearance?
Director: "Wonderful idea!"
The manager never had body odor again!
PS Over the years I did have to add "use deodorant regularly" to a few
of the training sessions.
