How about "human access openings"?
Or "opening, human access" if you prefer a military form?

OK, if round manhole covers have such excellent reasons to be round, then
why are rectangular manhole covers rectangular?
And should they be called personholes to avoid being gender-specific?

Edwin

However, only the round covers *cannot* fall in. The rectangular
and square ones can, and occaisionally do.
