Re: Punctuating the end of bullet points?
> You then have two
choices: modify the style guide, or make a conscious decision to ignore the style guide. The latter option is important: after all, it's a ***guide***, not a book of law. The only reason to use a style guide is to benefit from the experience of other people who have developed good solutions for a range of situations. Where the solutions don't fit your specific situation, develop a new solution. You'd be amazed at how often people need to be reminded of this distinction.
I agree with this if you are an independent author using
a third-party style guide as a reference. However, corporate
style guides are intended to ensure consistency among a
varied group of writers so that all publications issued
by the company have a common style. If a writer in that
situation has a serious problem with a recommendation,
presumably some editorial body exists to review decisions.
However, individual writers should *not* just discard
corporate style guide solutions as they're writing if
they happen to personally disagree with a particular
decision. That defeats the purpose of a corporate style
guide.
