Different strokes for different folks. People thrive on different things. Some prefer praise and recognition, some are "just give me the cash", others would be happy to have a team party, and a few might just be content to know they did a good job, how about a day off with pay, or tickets to a movie. A good manager will know what makes people tick and the best way to motivate them on an individual basis. The individual motivators should be used in conjunction with group motivators. The way I look at it, managing teams is a lot like raising children; they're all different and a cookie-cutter approach isn't always the most effective.

Ya know, I had my annual review yesterday and like last year, it went very
well. I am the only tech writer and I write for one department. Now it is
likely that there will openings for more writers in the near future. But...
at this point, people can look at a certain document and know that it is
mine or not.
When it comes to updates, revisions, corrections, etc., it is a no-brainer
who to talk to. I am not so thin skinned that I curl up in a fetal position
if I don't receive recognition for writing the latest Holy Grail of
procedures. Sure I like it when someone says something positive, but I do
not rely not it.
I look at myself as being a critical cog in the wheel or a part of a team.
When I complete a project I am content with the personal satisfaction of a
job well done. And going back to my review, my bonus and raise reflect how
well I do my job.
