While I firmly believe that understanding Photoshop is a BIG plus for any technical writer, and especially for a consultant, SnagIt is faster and produces just as effective screen shots for use in publications or online. The beauty of SnatIT is the screen capture and manipulation can all be done in one program.

I worked as a contract writer in one global company where the graphics department was separate from the writing department. The writers all used Word and FrameMaker, and the graphic artists used CorelDraw.

So, while every writer doesn't need to be an expert with Photoshop, they should at least have a solid understanding of graphic illustration as it applies to both print and online products. That way, if you happen to get a contract with the "world's largest computer company," you'll be able to adapt what you know about one graphics program to another.
