Sounds like your rows are set for fixed height.

Actually, what I meant was that text extending beyond the end of the
column is disappearing - as opposed to the text wrapping within the cell
to conform to the size of the cell. Does the same advice still apply?

David Downing wondered: <<I have a Word table in which the cell text
won't wrap, even though the cell properties indicate that the text is
set to wrap. We solved the problem by using the format painter to
paste the format in from another table that does work properly, and
there's always the solution of inserting manual returns, but neither of
these addresses the problem directly.>>

By "won't wrap", I assume you mean that the columns keep growing wider
and wider without end, amen? If that's the case, the problem isn't with
the paragraph styles: it's with the table properties, as your use of
the format painter suggests.

Position the text cursor inside the table, then open the Table menu and
select Table Properties. In the resulting dialog box, select the Column
tab and examine the settings for the column width field. If "preferred
width" is not selected (checkbox), then the column will expand to fit
the text you enter--a useful option, but not if you don't want the
table to behave that way. <g>

Not sure how to set "preferred width" by default; that's the way it
works on my computer, but the location of the setting likely changes
from version to version of Word.
