Thanks so very much for the summary. Very handy reading list

I would also add that it pays to read what is written within an organisation. Read the internal newsletter(s), what senior officers are saying, speeches they are giving etc

Like it or not they talk about what they want and what they are planning. Avoid nasty surprises.

We of all people should be able to read between the lines to understand what message they are trying to convey. These people like messages. Know their messages and get some clues about what they're expecting.

They're also setting the corporate culture. They might think they totally set the culture. They wish. Their influence varies between organisations. We ignore them at our peril.
