I'm curious whether anyone noticed a decrease in spam during the time
that the newsgroup link was broken. Spammers regularly harvest email
addresses from newsgroups. Of the approximately 700 spams I get every
day, I attribute about half to my newsgroup postings.
I like reading techwr-l via a newsgroup, because the threading and
archiving ability of most newsreaders is far better than that of most
email clients. When I'm using a slow modem, the newsgroup allows me to
bypass downloading the full text of any messages I don't find
interesting.
While the newsgroup was broken, I switched my subscription over to a
gmail account. A big advantage of this strategy is that I can read
messages from home or from work, yet keep track of which articles I've
read. I like the ability to label a message, so I can go back and
find, say, "all messages relating to XML which I found particularly
useful."
I'm quite curious about the RSS suggestion. Do any RSS readers allow
you to mark messages as "interesting" or to shuffle them into folders
by topic?
