I don't know what decisions were made in the case of the software you're
working on, but, in general, you can easily set a command line not to
echo the keystrokes. That's frequently done. I imagine that having the
keystrokes replaced by asterisks would be possible, too. In both cases,
you'd fiddle with the standard output.
