IMO reshaping newsletters (printed or electronic) into a more
interactive form is neither good nor bad--many regulars of this list
have contributed thoughts on both side of that argument. My argument is
more basic: that when a "blog" tries to become too focused, too
topic-specific, and too organized, it really ceases behaving like the
free-form idealistic stream-of-consciousness online diary that I
associate with the term "blog" and they become instead more like
electronic columns or newsletters in their own right.

It's probably a semantic argument of connotative meaning vs. denotative
meaning. I always have and probably always will consider a "blog" to be
something informal and trivial with little structure and virtually no
limit on scope of content. Anything that tries to focus on something
tighter--whether it be global economic trends or the activities of a
chapter of a professional writer's organization--ceases to be a "blog"
to my mind and becomes a more structured organism like an electronic
newsletter or an online column. It just irks me a little to see the
term used that way, the same way it irks me to see people refer to an
SUV like a Ford Explorer or a Hummer as a "car" because I always think
of them as "trucks." ;-)
