I'm probably nit-picking here, but this is something that has irked me for
some time.

It's of course quite common for applications to offer the option to open
recent documents (generally on the File menu). I've used Mac applications
(as well as PC applications if I'm not mistaken) that offer the option of
clearing the recent list with a simple click of the mouse, or those which
automatically remove files from the list when one attempts to open files
which have been deleted, moved or renamed. However, in Word and other MS
Office products this does not appear to be the case. For example, when I
try to open a file from the recent list in Word -- a file which I've moved,
deleted or renamed -- I get a dialog box that says:

The document name or path is not valid.
Try one or more of the following:
* Check the path to make sure it was typed correctly.
* On the File menu, click Open. Search for the file using this dialog box.

However, the file remains on the recent list. I find this annoying and I
cannot think of a case where this behavior could be helpful.

I just checked Excel and it does the same thing, except with a different
message. On the other hand, FrontPage removes the file automatically if it
has been deleted, moved or renamed.

IMHO this behavior doesn't seem very consistent or helpful, at least in MS
products.
