I've only consulted for large companies, but I learned and saw enough
to know it wasn't for me. (My point of view comes from companies like
Aetna/US Healthcare, Bass Hotels and Resorts, and GE.)
I've worked for very small companies, and didn't enjoy that either. I
found more than not that unless you're in the clique, you're screwed
as far as contributing to workflow and direction. I've actually
enjoyed working for mid-size companies the best... Some structure,
lots of opportunities, and good pay and benefits.
